Moving is considered to be one of the most stressful experiences we deal with in life. From finding the property, finalising the deal to actually physically moving in. To make the move to your new home as smooth as possible allow yourself plenty of time and read through these top tips.
1. Declutter in advance.
Moving all your belongings and then realising when you get to your new home that you no longer need some of your items is pointless. Take time to go through your clothes, books, kitchen equipment, and any other belongings that you have accumulated to consider whether you really need them and if not have a clear out before you move rather than after. This will lighten the load and gives you the opportunity to have a good spring clean before you move home.
2. Organisation is key.
Whether you are moving next door properties or next door countries being organised will help the experience of moving be a stress free one. Make sure you have suitable packing materials that include durable boxes, packing tape, packing material and a pen to mark what is in each box. For valuable items it is always advisable to get bespoke packaging made for that item such as a painting or a antique chair.
3. Pack with care.
Every single item should be packed up and protected in a professional way. Just because there is space in the box does not mean that it should be filled to the top. Do this and you risk not being able to lift the box. Put the heaviest items at the bottom of the box, fill any spaces with paper and don’t forget to create a cushion at the bottom. Wrap each item separately paying even more attention to anything that could break. Acid free paper is preferred as newspaper can leave a residue behind.
4. International moves.
Moving to a country involves even more organisation. Firstly check the customs of your new country to check if there are any restrictions of bringing items into the country. Then it pays to see whether there are any must have items that you cannot get in your new country that you can take with you. The Internet is a great tool to answer these questions and there are likely to be Facebook pages set up to assist expatriates, so use them and get questioning.
