6 ways to keep mosquitoes at bay

Make sure your home is a sanctuary and not a place for mosquitoes to flock to.

One downside of living in a warmer climate is the bugs it attracts such as mosquitoes. Sometimes even impossible to see, they can cause you discomfort once they have bitten not to mention being carriers of diseases such as dengue fever and Zika virus. In order to protect your home from these unwanted visitors consider one of these following solutions.

1. Window and door screens.

If you enjoy having the windows and doors open to embrace the breeze then fit screens. Easy to install and with a wide range on the market, this is one way to keep mosquitoes at bay.

2. Light traps.

Mosquitoes are lured in by light so traps have been devised with this function in mind. Stocked in most electrical or department stores, you can pick from a portable one to move around your home as and when you need them to zap up these unwanted bugs.

3. Minimise stagnate water.

Mosquitoes like to breed in standing water. Therefore make sure you do not create the perfect conditions to draw them in. This could simply be a disused tire where water collects or even the pot your plants live in. Try and keep surfaces clear of water and ensure that there is adequate and working drainage for rainfall to flow from.

4. Natural remedies.

Mosquitoes can be deterred by a whole host of natural remedies. Citronella coils that you burn are one popular option. Alternatively if you wish to make your own then mix neem oil mixed with coconut oil to create a smell that mosquitoes detest. Alternatively try a combination of eucalyptus and lemon oil or camphor. All have qualities to ward off mosquitoes that you can use safely in your own home.

5. Plant garlic, lavendar, tulsi or marigold.

Mosquitoes aren’t a fan of any of these. If you have the space then why not plant these near to your doors or in window boxes to create a barrier zone for mosquitoes to keep away from.

6. Fit a mosquito net for your bed.

If you continually get bitten at night then why not fit a mosquito net over your bed. There are a lot of different styles on the market to suit your taste including sheer linens. Hang them around a four-poster bed for a real luxury feel.
