6 tips on saving water at home

Save water in your home with these easy life hacks.

In the global drive to become more ‘green’, Vietnam is already taking steps to build more sustainable buildings. Looking after the planet is becoming increasingly important not to mention a great business opportunity too. On a smaller scale we can also do our bit. Saving water at home will help the strain on resources but will also help save money too.

1. Turn off the tap.

When brushing your teeth, washing your hands or even doing the washing up don’t forget to turn the tap off. It can make a difference as according to research, by turning off your tap when you are brushing your teeth can save as much as 7,500 litres each month.

2. Shower rather than bath.

Assuming that you are quick in the shower, well less than 10 minutes, there is no doubt that the shower uses less water than a bath. If you are desperate to sink yourself in a tub full of bubbles, then maybe limit the amount of baths you allow yourself each week.

3. Save rainwater.

If you have a garden or balcony you can collect rainwater to reuse. Depending on your space you can invest in a water butt but even the ice cubes in your finished drink can be used to feed your plants too. Also don’t forget to water your plants early in the morning rather than in the midday sun.

4. Choose the economy setting.

Vietnam is having a drive to go green. As technology improves as does their efficiency. Washing machines use less electricity and water than ever before. Many now come with an economy setting for even less water consumption. But don’t be put off by the longer cycle length and remember to only use home appliances when they are full and don’t be tempted to switch on with just half a load.

5. Don’t delay fixing a leak.

The sound of a dripping tap can be annoying. It also increases our water consumption along with a leaky pipe. Be quick to repair these or request for your landlord to do it to save water and to also prevent any damage to your home.

6. Cook with care.

Keen cooks can do their bit too. When prepping food, wash vegetables in the sink rather than under the tap. Use just enough water for the saucepan (or even kettle if you are making a hot drink). Consider boiling different items together such as pasta and vegetables, or reuse water once the pasta is cooked. Finally when it comes to washing up remember to turn off the tap whilst you are rinsing.
